“I’ve already looked him up,” I announce. “Keiro of Folgo is male, 30 years old, and temporarily based on the station. I’ve seen his picture and I’d say he’s handsome enough for a Koiran, like a cross between a white werewolf and a snow beast with horns.”
“When are you just going to stick to humans and Alliance people?” Set asks.
I dismiss him by putting my highlighted magenta hair behind my shoulders, “What’s the point of being out in the galaxy if I’m only going to be with human or the more boring human-like Alliance people?”
“I take offense to that,” Set says. “Not all Alliance people are boring.”
We all laugh. The Empire is known for its strict societal rules and lack of entertainment.
“Well, I will tell you one thing, I’m not ready to resign myself to the goddess of humanity’s convent on Hogo yet,” I say sarcastically. “And who knows? Maybe this Keiro is my one true love in the galaxy.”
Set smirks.
“At least you are physically compatible,” Jon says.
“The only good thing about that stupid necklace Tiro gave me was the database inside of it to let me know which species wouldn’t kill me. I don’t want another incident like with the Agnorrian at the Galactic Gambling Games, which is how I got into this mess to begin with.”
“I’m sorry, what?” Set asks. “How are you and a big snow wolf remotely compatible?”
“Shapeshifter,” Karen says taking a sip of her third gin and tonic. “Koirans shapeshift into humanoids passable for human.”
Set looks to Jon for confirmation, and he nods.
“It’s true. It’s not just a human myth. They were a human myth because some of them got stranded on Earth and had to live side-by-side with humans for centuries. But in the galaxy, they obviously prefer to be among their own.”
“I don’t even want to know the details of how they shapeshift,” Set says the words like it’s the most disgusting thing he has ever thought of. “Gia, I’d say you are better off with the Agnorrian.”
“You’re such a racist sometimes Set,” I say.
He holds up his hands, “How is it normal to shapeshift? How do you not find the idea of that, bones and fur shifting around, the most sickening thing ever?”
Karen interjects then, “Obviously you’ve never read any paranormal romances from Earth.”
Karen and I both look at one another and laugh.
“How do you suppose to seduce this Koiran anyway?” Set asks. “I doubt any tricks you’ve learned from your romance novels will help.”
“Well, when he gets back to the station, I will ask him about Hogo. He’s been there,” I say. “He’s an architect.”
Set laughs and takes a drink from his wine. “And you think that will lead you down the path of love? Architects never stray from their species, no matter how attractive the female may be.”
I frown.
“It’s true that this is a steep hill for Gia to climb,” Jon says. “But I’ve no doubt she can somehow manage it.”
Set looks at Jon then, “You’re in on it. You kinky man.”
It’s Jon’s turn to look innocent. “Gia and I have a confidential agreement between patient and doctor.”
“And no doubt the galaxy is waiting anxiously for your next medical paper, Doctor,” Karen exclaims, and everyone laughs at my expense.
I take a sip of water. “There won’t be any more medical reports on my sex life. That’s not the agreement.”
“Not unless you require further medical treatment,” Jon says. “But that shouldn’t happen again, right Gia?”
“No, next time I would rather see my name in the GC’s ‘Intergalactic Species Sexual Contract Breakers of the Week list,” I say fervently, and everyone agrees.
“Seriously though, is six months or a year, really such a long time Gia?” Set asks.
“Yes Set, it’s the principle of the thing. I’m no Lyran’s property to mark,” I reply. “I will pursue this Koiran.”

A SCIENCE FICTION DATING STORY
A few weeks ago, my Lyran lover left me with something I would rather not have, his mating scent, which marks me as his to the entire galaxy. Even though to most women in the galaxy, he's a good catch, I don't want to marry him, so I don't want to carry his scent on my person.
According to my doctor on Falcon Station, the only way to rid myself of this Lyran smell intermixed with my own pheromones is to get intimate with a Koiran wolf-snow beast shifter. The only problem is Koirans are extremely rare, and they are incredibly secretive.
Luckily for me, circumstances in the galaxy have changed dramatically in the past weeks, just enough to allow me a chance meeting for a legitimate purpose with an eligible Koiran male.
But will I also lose my heart to this mysterious shapeshifter?
